Your first physiotherapy visit: what to bring

A practical guide to preparing for a physiotherapy assessment, explaining your symptoms and understanding the next steps.

Bring the information you already have

You do not need to diagnose the problem before booking a physiotherapy assessment. Bring relevant reports, scans, referral letters and details of medicines or previous treatment if you have them. If you are recovering after surgery, bring the discharge summary and the surgeon’s instructions.

Choose clothing that lets you move comfortably and allows the area being assessed to be examined. Ask the clinic beforehand if you are unsure what to wear or bring.

Explain how the problem affects your day

The conversation usually covers when the problem began, what makes it better or worse, and your general health. Be specific about the activities that have changed. Getting out of a chair, working at a desk, climbing stairs and returning to a sport are different goals.

Mention symptoms that you think may be unrelated as well as previous injuries and operations. This information helps the clinician decide what to examine and whether another assessment is needed.

Understand the assessment and plan

An assessment may include observing movement and checking the affected muscles or joints. The exact examination depends on your symptoms and circumstances. You can ask what a test involves and say if something is uncomfortable.

Before leaving, ask what the findings mean, what you should do at home and when progress will be reviewed. If exercises are suggested, ask for a demonstration and clear instructions for what to do if symptoms change.

Plan your visit to the clinic

Dr. Vandana Chauhan’s Physiotherapy Clinic is at E-69, Ground floor, E-block, Sector 51, Noida, near LPS School. Use the website’s directions link and call to confirm appointment availability.

The number of visits and type of care depend on the assessment. A first visit is a chance to understand the problem and agree on sensible next steps, rather than a promise of a fixed recovery time.
