Shoulder stiffness
Frozen shoulder: pain, stiffness and getting assessed
Why a stiff, painful shoulder needs an assessment, what to tell your physiotherapist and how a plan can fit your symptoms.

A stiff shoulder is worth understanding
When dressing, reaching a shelf or sleeping becomes difficult, shoulder pain can affect much more than exercise. Frozen shoulder is one possible cause of persistent pain and restricted movement, but it is not the explanation for every painful shoulder.
An examination helps distinguish the problem from other causes. Make a note of how symptoms began, which movements have become difficult and whether an injury or operation came first. Mention diabetes and other relevant health conditions at your appointment.
Describe the activities that matter
Tell your physiotherapist whether pain, stiffness or both are limiting you. Give examples such as fastening clothing, reaching your hair or turning over in bed. These details help make the assessment and later reviews relevant to your own day.
It is also useful to say what you have tried already and how the shoulder responded. Bring previous reports if the problem has been assessed elsewhere.
Let the plan match the symptoms
Physiotherapy may include advice and exercises to work on movement and strength. The plan should reflect how painful and restricted your shoulder is. Forcing strenuous exercises because someone else found them helpful is not a substitute for an assessment.
Frozen shoulder can take a long time to settle. Ask what changes to watch for, how to pace the agreed exercises and when the plan should be reviewed. There is no single recovery date that applies to everyone.
Know when the problem needs prompt attention
Seek urgent medical advice for sudden severe shoulder pain, an inability to move the arm, a badly swollen or misshapen shoulder, persistent loss of feeling, or pain after an accident. Feeling feverish or generally unwell alongside shoulder symptoms also needs medical attention.
Dr. Vandana Chauhan’s listed areas of care include frozen shoulder. At the clinic, discuss your own symptoms before deciding which treatment or exercises are suitable.
